Claiming Your Territory: Walking in God's Promises and Prophecies

We are in a spiritual warfare, constantly taking new territory. Just as God delivered the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, He wants to deliver us from wandering in our own wilderness. But this deliverance requires us to understand what God is trying to do in our lives.

What Does It Mean to Take Territory?

Taking territory isn't just about physical land or material possessions. Houses, cars, and wealth are poor substitutes for what God really wants to give you. Territory can be:

  • Finding functional patterns to replace dysfunctional family systems
  • Recovery from addiction
  • Restoration in your marriage
  • Reclaiming your children for God
  • Stepping into your identity as a Proverbs 31 woman

Whatever territory you need to claim, it's about stepping into what God has already promised you.

How Do Promises and Prophecies Work?

A promise from God is a binding declaration or assurance that commits Him to do something specific. When God gives you a promise, it gives you the right to expect its fulfillment.

The amazing thing about God's promises is that they exist before they manifest. When God speaks something, it exists whether you can see it or not. Just as He created light on the first day but didn't create the sun until the fourth day, His promises are real before they become visible.

God's promises are characterized by His unwavering faithfulness. Numbers 23:19 reminds us: "God is not a man that He should lie, nor a son of man that He should repent. Has He said and will He not do? Or has He spoken and will He not make it good?"

What Was the First Promise in the Bible?

Genesis 3:15 contains both the first promise and the first prophecy in Scripture: "I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel."

This verse establishes:

  • A promise of enmity (hostility) between the serpent and humanity
  • A prophecy that the woman's seed (Christ) would crush the serpent's head

This isn't just about Jesus versus Satan—that battle is already won. It's about the ongoing spiritual warfare we face. The enemy can only strike at our heel (mess with our walk), but we have the authority to crush his head (destroy his authority).

How Do We Crush the Enemy's Head?

We crush the enemy's head when we align with the purpose of Jesus. First John 3:8 tells us: "For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil."

When we align ourselves with our purpose in Christ's purpose, we crush the enemy's authority. Every time we take a step in the right direction, every time we do what God tells us to do, we're crushing the enemy's head.

How Do We Use Promises to Wage Warfare?

Paul instructed Timothy: "This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare" (1 Timothy 1:18).

Here's how to wage warfare with your promises:

  • Write down the promises and prophecies God has given you
  • Remind God what He said (this also lets the enemy know you believe it)
  • Walk in the purpose of those words even before you see them manifested
  • Praise God in advance for what He has already done

What Does It Mean to Align with Purpose?

Aligning with purpose means preparing for what God has promised, just as expectant parents prepare for a baby. It means:

  • Taking responsibility for your calling
  • Remembering who you are as a child of God
  • Making choices that reflect your identity in Christ
  • Setting your face "like flint" toward your purpose

As men especially, we need to lead the way in obedience. We cannot expect our families to walk in obedience if we don't model it first.

Life Application

This week, I challenge you to:

  • Identify the territory God is calling you to claim. What area of your life needs to come under God's authority?
  • Write down the promises and prophecies God has spoken over your life. If you've forgotten them, ask Him to remind you.
  • Begin waging warfare with those promises. Declare them daily, align your actions with them, and praise God in advance for their fulfillment.
  • When the enemy strikes at your heel (messes with your walk), remember your authority to crush his head through your obedience to God's purpose.

Ask yourself:

  • What mountain have I been circling that God wants me to stop circling?
  • What promises have I forgotten that I need to reclaim?
  • How can I better align my daily choices with God's purpose for my life?
  • In what ways am I giving glory to God for the territory He's helping me claim?

Remember, in every spiritual battle, victory is already present, waiting to manifest. Your job is simply to step into it through faith and obedience.
